Cardiovascular Changes in Space

Did you know that arteries age faster in space than they do on Earth? In this session, we will explore how the human body changes in space! See the effects of spaceflight on the cardiovascular system, discover how space exploration links to the secrets of aging, and find out how science in space is shaping the future.

Materials and Preparation

You will need the following materials for this activity: 

  • A pencil or pen
  • A piece of paper
  • A ruler, measuring tape, or blocks to measure with
  • A few balloons
  • One straw
  • A pair of scissors
  • A piece of non-stretchy string (it should be long enough to wrap around your head once)

Laura Fitzgibbon-Collins

Laura Fitzgibbon-Collins

Dr. Laura Fitzgibbon-Collins is a postdoctoral research fellow at Western University and an instructor at York University. Her research focuses on cardiovascular physiology and aging, and she is passionate about gender equity in health and STEM.
