Trust the Trusses

What do roller coasters, bridges, and the Rogers Centre roof have in common? Trusses–triangular assemblies that make structures extra strong! Join CAGIS Alumna and engineering student, Christiane, as she brings us behind the scenes of civil engineering! Explore trusses and construct a truss bridge–then put your structure to the test!

 

Time

Ages 7-12: 8 am PT • 9 am MT • 10 am CT • 11 am ET • 12 pm AT
Ages 13-17: 10 am PT • 11 am MT • 12 pm CT • 1 pm ET • 2 pm AT

 
Materials and Preparation
  • At least 50 popsicle sticks
  • Hot glue gun, craft glue, or other fast-drying glue
  • String, ~150 cm
  • Small reusable grocery bag or gallon-sized ziploc bag
  • Weights (could be exercise weights, cans of soup, etc)
  • Two raised surfaces to bridge with your structure (chairs, tables, boxes, etc.)

Christiane Luboya 

Christiane is a 2nd year civil engineering student at McGill University. She is a former CAGIS teen ambassador and continues to work with CAGIS as a volunteer. She has a passion for STEM, particularly mathematics and physics. In her free time, she enjoys watching sports and listening to music.
