I attended a recent CAGIS event led by a team of engineers at Zebra Technologies, a company that makes everything from the barcode scanners that we use every day to helpful robots that carry things for you. This event was a great opportunity to see pioneering technology and the people behind it. The engineers showed us these great ideas and what goes into making those ideas easy and accessible to the everyday consumer. I am definitely glad I went to this CAGIS event!

During the event, we had the opportunity to see different robotics and technology and all the hard work that goes into developing these devices we use daily. The different technologies were tested in extreme environmental simulations such as high impact or falling. The engineers showed us all the equipment used for testing. While there were special machines to test these devices, I was surprised to see that there were also everyday appliances, like washing machines! The team also showed us some coding software and taught us how to use some of it. I thought it was very cool that the software could be taught to find a specific image in a picture.

We also learned about their Radio Frequency Identification Label (RFID) technology, which sounds fancy and complicated, but are really just the barcodes that we use every day. They make big warehouses easier to run.

We saw robots programmed to carry things to different spots. We even took turns driving them, which was definitely my favourite part!

Everyone at Zebra was kind and helpful. They explained everything and even showed us how to do things ourselves. Special thanks to Pamela and the Women in Engineering team who put on a great presentation and event!
