Did you know eye exams test a lot more than just your vision? Let’s take a closer look! In this session, we will step into the shoes of an optometrist! Construct an eye model and learn the steps of an eye exam from a real eye doctor. Then, get a behind-the-scenes tour of the tools and techniques optometrists use to see inside your eyes! It’s sure to be an eye-opening experience!
Time
Ages 7-11: 8 am PT • 9 am MT • 10 am CT • 11 am ET • 12 pm AT
Ages 11-16: 10 am PT • 11 am MT • 12 pm CT • 1 pm ET • 2 pm AT
Materials and Preparation
You will need the following materials:
- A styrofoam ball (available at the Dollar store)
- Alternatively, you can use aluminum foil that we will scrunch into a ball
- Paper (at least 4 sheets)
- Markers (1 black, 1 red, 1 blue, plus any other colours of your choice)
- Alternatively, you can use pens instead of markers
- Scissors
- Tape
- Optional: a pipecleaner
Meet the Expert
Dr. Michaela Hellinga
Dr. Michaela Hellinga recently graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science with a Doctor of Optometry degree with Distinction. She was born and raised in Guelph, Ontario.
Dr. Michaela is passionate about serving her community. In her spare time, she enjoys many outdoor activities such as exploring hiking trails and camping, as well as crocheting and reading a good book.
