Did you hear about the recent water restrictions in Calgary? Did you know that they were caused by a broken pipe? Join us and put your engineering skills to the test by building your own water distribution system to keep this essential service flowing!
Time
Ages 7-11: 8 am PT • 9 am MT • 10 am CT • 11 am ET • 12 pm AT
Ages 11-17: 10 am PT • 11 am MT • 12 pm CT • 1 pm ET • 2 pm AT
Materials and Preparation
- At least 6 paper or styrofoam cups (must be able to poke holes in them)
- Water – approximately 400 mL
- Rocks or similarly weighted items that will fit in cups (used to weigh down cups)
- Pen or pencil
- Glue gun and glue gun sticks
- Scissors
- At least 5 straws (can be bendy or straight; ideally ones that can be cut with scissors)
- Duct tape or electrical tape
- At least 10 toothpicks
- Tin foil
- Scrap paper
- Paper towels
- One of the following:
- Modelling clay (play dough will not work)
- Plasticine
- Sticky Tack
- Duct tape or electrical tape
- One of the following:
- Book or box to raise cups approximately 10 and 15 cm
- Extra cups for stacking to raise cups
- Water cleanup (one of the following to place below building area):
- Baking sheet
- Towel

Engr. Lois Adeyemo
Lois Adeyemo is a Civil and Environmental Engineer, Co-Founder of AfriteQ Academy and Founder of Adelois Consulting. She is dedicated to empowering young minds to pursue careers in STEM with an impact of over 500 students. She is the STEM Committee Lead for the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria – Lagos Chapter and Professional Outreach Event Manager for the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Lagos Chapter. She is a Global Ambassador of SWE. Lois is a self-taught graphic designer and website designer. She holds a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering from Newcastle University and a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering from Swansea University, both in the United Kingdom.
