How Does A Heart Beat?

Can you feel your heart beating? Are you ready to find out HOW it beats? Make your own working heart model with CAGIS Graduate and physician, Dr. Anahita! Pump the heart and watch blood flow through the chambers!

 

Time

Ages 7-12: 8 am PT • 9 am MT • 10 am CT • 11 am ET • 12 pm AT
Ages 13-17: 10 am PT • 11 am MT • 12 pm CT • 1 pm ET • 2 pm AT

 
Materials and Preparation
  • 3 jars or glasses
  • 4 bendy straws (can be paper or plastic; if you do not have access to bendy straws, aquarium tubing like this will also work)
  • 2 balloons (we recommend 4 just in case of rips/tears)
  • Tape
  • 3 cups of water 
  • Food colouring
  • 1 Toothpick
  • Scissors
  • 2 rubber bands

Dr. Anahita Malvea

Anahita is a fourth-year radiology resident doctor at the University of Toronto. She completed a degree in Nanotechnology Engineering at the University of Waterloo followed by medical school at the University of Ottawa, before starting her residency at the University of Toronto. Anahita is a CAGIS alumni and fondly remembers many CAGIS events (paper making, model race car, science centre trips) she attended which fostered her interest in STEM and eventually led her to pursue a STEM career.
