Do you want to contribute to real scientific research? It’s time to be a community scientist! Join us for this splashy session as we explore water field testing! Test your local water sources for alkalinity, chloride content, and more using your own Water Rangers Test Kits. Then, discover how to analyze water turbidity with a home-made Secchi disk!

Materials and Preparation
Participants who registered before January 22nd will receive a free kit from Water Rangers in the mail.
Participants who did not register before January 22nd can purchase a Water Rangers Tiny Kit here. The Tiny Kit contains almost all of the materials included in the free kits.
Additional materials required for the session:
- Water sample (approximately 150 mL) from your environment – snow, rainwater, from a puddle, or from a water body! You can store your water sample in a closed container in the fridge prior to the session.
- A small cup – about 4 cm tall, that can hold 150 mL water
- White, plastic bottle cap (MUST be white)
- Black sharpie
- A coin that will fit inside the bottle cap (e.g. a dime or nickel)
- 25 cm piece of string (light coloured, e.g. white or tan)
- Hot glue gun (please ensure you have adult supervision and assistance) or tape
- Ruler
- Paper or other material to protect workstation
- Tall glass of water (at least 20 cm tall; bottle cap must fit inside)
- Red and blue food colouring

Praise Osifo
Praise is the Community and Research Coordinator for Water Rangers! Water Rangers, a Canadian non-profit social enterprise, creates accessible water quality testing kits that empower community scientists worldwide to protect local water ecosystems and address key data gaps. Praise supports Water Rangers’ research, collaborates with community partners, and develops valuable resources to support these efforts. Praise has been involved in grassroots non-profits, youth STEAM engagement, and corporate sustainability. She is dedicated to social and environmental justice, with a focus on uplifting Indigenous-led and arts-based movements!
