Lungs and a stethoscope

Crackles, gurgles, and rhonchi, oh my! These are the sounds your breathing makes when you have a respiratory infection. In this session, we will make model lungs to explore what really happens in our lungs and airways when we take a breath—and how things change when we get sick! 

Time

Ages 7-11: 8 am PT • 9 am MT • 10 am CT • 11 am ET • 12 pm AT
Ages 11-16: 10 am PT • 11 am MT • 12 pm CT • 1 pm ET • 2 pm AT


Materials and Preparation
  • A clear water bottle with the bottom cut off (e.g., see photo below; please have this ready in advance)
  • Gelatin/jell-o (if you are making it yourself, please prepare it in advance of the session)
  • A spoon
  • A few balloons
  • Scissors
  • A plastic bag (e.g., plastic grocery bag or a large ziploc)
  • Tape
  • Syrup or liquid glue

Meet the Expert

Peyman

Peyman Heidari

Peyman is an upper-year medical student in Ontario. Prior to entering a Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, Peyman also completed an honours degree in medical sciences, a graduate degree in neuroscience, and has several years of experience conducting biomedical research in both a wet laboratory setting and with human research participants. Peyman’s professional philosophy centres on advocacy and equity in STEM and healthcare.
