Protein Puzzles

Saturday, February 28, 2026

Did you know that scientists estimate there are 10 TRILLION proteins in every human cell?! Proteins follow the directions encoded in DNA to carry out basically all biological processes… but how do scientists identify them? They use a technique called Western blots for everything from vaccine development to cancer treatment! Join us and neuroscientist, Ivana, as we create a model Western blot to solve an (imaginary) biological mystery, just like researchers do in real life!

Ivana Okaro

Ivana is the coordinator of CAGIS’ Canada-wide Teen Ambassadors Program as she pursues a a MSc in Neuroscience at McGill University! Ivana’s work explores the neuroprotective effects of sildenafil treatment in newborn hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. Her experiences in clinical and basic-science research have fueled her commitment to translating lab discoveries into meaningful care for children and families. Beyond the lab, Ivana designs tools that help first-generation science students forge their own paths and collaborates with hospitals to create cranial prosthetics for cancer patients. She keeps accessible science communication at the heart of her endeavours, recognizing its ability to dispel myths and bridge the gap between STEM professionals and their communities.

This programming was developed by Sydney Brooks and Ivana Okaro.
