Rain Gardens

Have you seen reports of flooding across Canada? What can people do to help? Rain gardens may look pretty but they also help prevent flooding and stop pollution! In this session, build your own miniature rain gardens and experiment with flood waters to discover their effects!

 

Time

Ages 7-11: 8 am PT • 9 am MT • 10 am CT • 11 am ET • 12 pm AT
Ages 11-17: 10 am PT • 11 am MT • 12 pm CT • 1 pm ET • 2 pm AT

 
Materials and Preparation
  • 1 garbage bag 
  • 2 circular or square foil (disposable) pie tins 
  • 5 clear plastic cups (disposable)
  • Hole punch
  • Scissors 
  • Ruler 
  • Tape
  • Black marker or sharpie 
  • Paper and pencil
  • 500g/1lb (at least) white or natural modelling clay
    • Can be purchased at the dollar store
  • 2 cups of potting soil or garden dirt
  • 8 cups of water 
  • Blue food colouring 
  • Food that floats (popcorn, cheerios, or other cereal type) 
  • Cooking oil 
  • Measuring spoons (teaspoon and tablespoon) 
  • 2 small rocks with at least one relatively flat surface each 
  • A table or raised surface to set up your experiment

 

Meet the Expert

Mikaela Moore, M.S.

Mikaela is an Earth scientist, an outdoor educator, and a CAGIS Project Coordinator! She has researched the ecological significance of marine plankton and completed a Master of Science in Oceanography from Southampton University, as well as an undergraduate degree in Geology from Queen’s University. Mikaela is passionate about conserving our environment and creating opportunities for youth to explore the natural world!
