3… 2… 1… BLAST OFF! In this session, wewill build our very own stomp rockets and send them soaring into the sky, learning about physics and engineering along the way. Discover the science behind launching rockets using air pressure as we embark on a propulsion-packed adventure!
Materials and Preparation
A FREE materials kit will be sent out to CAGIS Virtual members who sign up for this session by September 30th. You must be a member to receive a kit. If you do not have a CAGIS Virtual membership, you can get one here.
You will also need:
- Scissors;
- Construction paper (1 sheet);
- An empty 2L bottle (e.g., 2L pop bottle);
- Cotton balls or tissues/Kleenex;
- A flat and study base that is around or less than4 cm tall, like a tissue/Kleenex box, a shoebox, or an old tupperware/container;
- Ruler;
- Pencil/pen/marker;
- Eye protection (e.g., goggles, glasses, or sunglasses)
Experts
Sophia Aslanidis and Rhiannon Vu are 4th year Engineering students at McMaster University and are the Co-Vice Presidents of Outreach for the Women in Engineering Society. Sophia specializes in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering, and Rhiannon specializes in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering, and they are both passionate about sharing their love for STEM with youth.

Will everything I need be included inside the Materials Kit?
No. In addition to the contents of the materials kit, you will also need:
- Scissors;
- Construction paper (1 sheet);
- One empty 2L bottle (e.g., 2L pop bottle);
- Cotton balls or tissues/Kleenex;
- A flat and study base that is around or less than 4 cm tall, like a tissue/Kleenex box, a shoebox, or an old tupperware/container;
- Ruler;
- Pencil/pen/marker;
- Eye protection (e.g., goggles, glasses, or sunglasses)
I am a member, but I did not sign up for the session by September 30th. How can I get the materials?
Members who did not sign up in time to receive a free materials kit can purchase the kit contents separately. You will need:
- Three feet of 1/2″ PEX Pipe, cut into two 1′ segments, one 2.25″ segment, and one 9.75″ segment;
- Two 1/2″ 90° copper elbows;
- One 1/2″ copper straight coupling;
- Electrical tape (available at Dollarama)
I am not a member. Can I still participate in this session without receiving the materials kit?
Non-members can purchase the kit contents separately. You will need:
- Three feet of 1/2″ PEX Pipe, cut into two 1′ segments, one 2.25″ segment, and one 9.75″ segment;
- Two 1/2″ 90° copper elbows;
- One 1/2″ copper straight coupling;
