The Wide World of Ocean Science

Do you ever feel like there are too many cool STEM fields to choose from? Ocean Science might be for you – a field that involves geology, biology, chemistry and physics! 

Dive into this multidisciplinary field with ocean scientist, Mikaela! Create a model of the great conveyor belt (if you don’t know what that is, you definitely need to check out this session!),  do experiments to explore how ocean acidity and temperature affect coral reefs and other marine life, and so much more!

 

Time

Ages 7-12: 8 am PT • 9 am MT • 10 am CT • 11 am ET • 12 pm AT
Ages 13-17: 10 am PT • 11 am MT • 12 pm CT • 1 pm ET • 2 pm AT

 
Materials and Preparation

Experiment 1: 

  • Chalk (5 small pieces) – MUST be chalkboard chalk or rock climbing chalk (not sidewalk)
  • 5 glass jars
  • 2 cups of water (room temperature)
  • 1 cup of vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • ¼ tsp, 1 tsp, and ¼ cup measuring spoons/cups
  • pH strips (optional – if you have any left over from the Water Rangers kits or they are available at pet stores)

 

Experiment 2: This experiment should be conducted next to a sink!

  • ⅓ cup of corn syrup (honey or white Elmer’s school glue) 
  • ⅓ cup of dish soap (milk or clear Elmer’s school glue)
  • ⅓ cup of room temperature water
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil (canola oil, olive oil, or sesame oil)
  • ⅓ cup of rubbing alcohol (baby oil or nail polish remover)
  • A clear glass vase, bottle, or jar (must be the same diameter from top to bottom)
  • ⅓ cup measuring cup
  • A funnel 
  • Blue food colouring
  • Metal screw or nail
  • Cherry tomato, grape, or blueberry
  • Plastic bottle cap or other small plastic item NOT filled with air
  • Pingpong ball or small balloon

Mikaela Moore, M.S.

Mikaela is an Earth scientist, an outdoor educator, and a CAGIS Project Coordinator! She has researched the ecological significance of marine plankton and completed a Master of Science in Oceanography from Southampton University, as well as an undergraduate degree in Geology from Queen’s University. Mikaela is passionate about conserving our environment and creating opportunities for youth to explore the natural world!
