Scientists vs. Superbugs

Saturday, April 18, 2026

Did you know that we are surrounded by millions of bacteria?!

Most bacteria are harmless, but some can make us sick. Scientists use antibiotics to kill harmful bacteria. However, some bacteria have traits that allow them to survive these medicines. These resistant bacteria can then multiply and spread, leading to what scientists call superbugs.

Join us to play a game exploring how these superbugs form, experiment with the “amphiphilic” nature of soap, and more!

Dr. Jeella Acedo

Dr. Jeella Acedo is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Mount Royal University and an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the University of Calgary. Her primary research integrates biochemistry, bioinformatics, and microbiology to study molecules called antimicrobial peptides that can fight bacteria and help address antimicrobial resistance. She also leads education research focused on technology-enhanced active learning and Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs). Dr. Acedo is passionate about inspiring young people to explore science, stay curious, and see themselves as scientists.
