Are you eagerly waiting to make your first snowball of the season? Whip up your own batch of indoor “snow” using just two ingredients. It even feels cold!
You Will Need:
• a baking pan
• baking soda
• shaving cream
• (optional: biodegradable glitter)
Instructions
- Sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda on the pan.
- Add shaving cream, one tablespoon at a time, and mix. Repeat until you get the desired texture. The exact amount required will depend on the humidity in the room and the composition of your shaving cream.
- Add biodegradable glitter, if desired.
What’s Happening?
Once you have added enough shaving cream to the baking soda, you will notice that the texture changes and starts to look and feel like snow. You can mould it into shapes, and even make your own miniature snowperson!
Your fake snow will also feel chilly — for a little while, anyway! This is because a chemical reaction takes place between the baking soda and shaving cream. Shaving cream contains stearic acid, used in soap-making. It reacts with the baking soda to form new substances: sodium stearate and carbon dioxide, in addition to water. This reaction is endothermic — meaning it absorbs heat from its surroundings. During the reaction the liquid in the shaving cream evaporates, making your fake snow cool to the touch.
Your fake snow will stay fresh in an airtight container for about a week.
Did you know? Stearic acid is used in the movie industry to simulate snow, frost, or ice!
