STEM Challenges
STEM Challenge: Paleontology Challenge with Dino Dana
Dino Dana has your next #CAGISatHome STEM Challenge:
Your challenge is to excavate a dinosaur!
STEM Challenge: Rube Goldberg Machine
Your next STEM challenge is to build a Rube Goldberg Machine: a machine that completes a simple task in a really complicated way!
The challenge is to build a machine that will drop a bar of soap into someone’s hands in 10 to 20 steps. Then take video of the whole thing in one pass!
Rube Goldberg Challenge Results
We asked you to build a Rube Goldberg Machine that would drop a bar of soap into someone’s hand in 10 to 20 steps!
Here are the results! Learn the science and engineering of Rube Goldberg Machines, meet our STEM Challenge Champions, and watch their machines in action! Thanks to Kerianne, Julee, and Melina, our STEM Experts and Judges! To learn more watch Kevin Frankish’s live show recording.
STEM Challenge: Seed Germination
Your next stem challenge is to get seeds to germinate!
We want to see how many different kinds of seeds you can get to germinate, and how many of each kind of seed germinate!
Stay tuned for the follow up video with plant scientist Sara Stricker!
Seed Germination Results
We asked how many different kinds of seeds you could get to germinate, and how many of each kind of seed germinated.
Here are the results of our STEM Challenge and meet our STEM Challenge Champions! Plant scientist Sara Stricker from the Ontario Agricultural College at the University of Guelph tells us about the science of seed germination.
STEM Challenge: Grow Salt Crystals
We loved seeing your submissions to our first challenge. Here is your next challenge: Grow your own salt crystals!
We want to see how big you can grow your crystals and how creative you can be with their shapes!
Salt Crystals Results
We challenged you to grow your own crystals.
Here are the results! Chemist, Dr. Erin McConnell, announces our STEM Challenge Champions shares how crystals grow, and explains how you can keep them growing!
Here is your first challenge:
Build a bridge with only 10 pieces of paper and 30 cm of tape. Place stacks of books 15 cm apart to test your bridge and use anything you want as weights to test your bridge.
We asked you to build bridges with 10 pieces of paper and 30 cm of tape.
Here are the results! Civil Engineer, Whitney Surgenor, comments on the bridges and the design elements.
Junior Astronauts Activities
Message from the Canadian Space Agency about Junior Astronauts Camp
The health and safety of young Canadians and our personnel is our top priority. That is why we have decided to postpone the Junior Astronaut Camp to summer 2021. Registration will remain open until February 28, 2021. Kids are encouraged to do Junior Astronauts activities at home during the physical distancing period.
If you submitted your entry package on or before April 30:
• We will keep your file active for next year. No further action is required from you or your parents.
• If you are moving to Grade 10 (Secondary 4 in Quebec) in the next school year, you will remain eligible for the camp.
• We are acknowledging the effort to complete activities in all three streams before the original deadline by giving these entries two chances in the draw to win a spot for the camp.
If you submit your entry package after April 30:
• You must be enrolled in grade 6 through 9 (Grade 6 through Secondary 3 in Quebec) in the 2020–2021 school year.
