CAGIS programs are paused for the summer, but you can still enjoy STEM (Science, Technology, Trades, Engineering, and Math) with these tips from CAGIS Teen Ambassadors for a STEM-tastic season!

Explore the CAGIS Clubhouse

The CAGIS Clubhouse is a great place to find STEM inspiration. Diana recommends the Role Models page for stories about women and gender-diverse individuals in STEM fields, like engineering. Read about incredible engineers, like Erin Richardson, an aerospace engineer and CAGIS alumna!

Try CAGIS STEM Challenges

Up for a STEM Challenge? Visit our Contests page and step into the role of a STEM Professional with hands-on challenges! Sophia’s favourite is the Toy Engineering challenge, which she says “never gets old and allows kids to put their dreams into action”.

Do an at-home DIY STEM activity

Do-it-yourself, or DIY, activities are a great way to explore STEM concepts from home. For a natural science DIY, Sophia recommends growing your own food from table scraps this summer with this guide to starting a garden. For a DIY chemistry activity, Shireen suggests making slime by combining ½ cup of school glue with ⅓ cup of warm water and then separately combining ½ tsp of borax with ¼ cup of warm water. Mix the two combinations to create slime!

Get outside and explore the natural world

There’s a lot to explore outside, especially over the summer, so take a nature walk, have a picnic in the park, fly a kite, or create something using natural materials! Raneem recommends creating an ecosystem in a jar: a small, self-sustaining environment within a sealed container. Collect rocks, sand, soil, leaves, small plants, worms, and maybe a few insects, and layer them in a small container. Moisten the container with fresh water, then seal it. Now, sit back and observe how your ecosystem thrives!

Investigate STEM topics with apps and online resources

There are many resources available to support your journey in STEM. Want to learn more about nature? Try iNaturalist or Merlin; both apps will help you identify the plants and animals around you. Interested in space exploration? SkyView Lite will help you ID celestial objects, and NASA’s Eyes on the Solar System is a 3D tool you can use to explore planets, moons, and space crafts in real time! Want a more detailed view of the weather in your area? Try Windy, an app that shows you global live weather patterns in great detail. Curious about what’s below you? The Rockd app offers detailed information about the geologic features in your area and the Flyover Country app is perfect for understanding the terrain from your airplane seat on your next flight.
